What is your story?
Bloody good question! I am not 100 per cent sure and desperate to avoid a mid-life a crisis. A divorced dad with two adult children and an ex-wife with whom I have a good relationship. One reason why I am a Goon is because, when I divorced, I was determined not to go down the path of simply replacing one partner with another. I wanted to remain single but recognised that I needed a wider community to give me support and offer friendship
How long have you been with TGBC? First Book?
Crikey. It was just before Covid. I turned up at the pub and winged it; it was Last Exit to Brooklyn. I hadn't read the book, but had seen the film - so had some idea.
How did you end up coming to TGBC?
A mate liked an Event on Facebook that pricked my curiosity. Of course, my mate didn't turn up, but I was hooked.
What is your favourite TGBC book?
I can't say a favourite. The first one I read was Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman. It's one of the few books that can give you tears of joy and sorrow in the same paragraph. I suspect some Goons found it a tad sugary, but it asked a lot of questions in me. It's fairly rare that I have disliked a book. And when I have, I come away from the subsequent TGBC thinking I have misjudged it!
Why are you a member of TGBC?
So many reasons: Some great friends (and often their partners are lovely people too) It forces me to read stuff I would not normally read Some profound conversations I like a beer
What do you think a "Tough Guy" is?
Not the stereotypical Aussie bloke! I am often amused that when we often ask at Book Club 'who is the tough character in this novel?' it's often the female characters.
What is your favourite library?
Has to be the State Library of NSW - if only because it has a phenomenal rooftop bar with harbour views!
What book have we not read that you'd like to do at TGBC?
I am hopeless here! I just like turning up and being told what to read!
