Goon Profile - Courtney Hicks

Name:

Courtney Hicks

Chapter:

Auckland

What is your story?

I grew up in a small town surrounded by market gardens. Wanting to see more of the world and visit the sites I read about in history books I spent several years living and travelling overseas. Recently I moved home to Auckland, NZ because I wanted to be closer to family.

How long have you been with TGBC? First Book?

4 years this April. The Road by Cormac McCarthy

How did you end up coming to TGBC?

The Coburg Goons were doing a sausage sizzle at Bunnings. I asked what this book club was and met Darren, then Pres of Coburg. I like reading books and I like talking in pubs so I nervously took myself along to my first meet.

What is your favourite TGBC book?

The Son of Man by Jean-Baptiste Del Amo

Why are you a member of TGBC?

I enjoy being part of a community and I had been looking for something to connect with. My father was big on Rotary and involved in all sorts of groups and committees. Getting older I realised I was missing something like this, outside of family and work. TGBC fits as it combines my interests and hobbies and has been a place I’ve found so many new friends.

What book have we not read that you'd like to do at TGBC?

I would love to read some New Zealand authors like Witi Ihimaera. But I recently read Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump which would make for a great discussion at TGBC.

What's the best thing about TGBC?

The people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made.

What's your favourite drink?

Parrotdog Bitterbitch IPA

What is something people wouldn't know about you if they judged you by your cover?

I love swimming. I grew up around the beach and lakes. I will jump in Lake Taupō any time of the year no matter how cold. My partner thinks I’m mad.
