Chapter:
Surf Coast
What’s your story?
I’m a husband and a father of two young boys who’s lucky enough to live on the Surf Coast of Victoria. I’ve always loved reading and talking about books, as well as movies. This year I’ve also taken up running after some inspiration and support from other club members and I love getting out and running some of the local trails near home.
How long have you been with TGBC? First Book?
Since Christmas of 2018. My first book was William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’.
How did you end up coming to TGBC?
I’d commented on a Facebook community group post and mentioned how it would be great to find a local book club. Tim, a goon from the Geelong chapter commented and invited me to a meeting. I was really nervous, but everyone made me feel really welcome and I pretty quickly worked out that I’d found something special.
What is your favourite TGBC book?
It would have to be a toss up between two… ‘Neuromancer’, my first club book, will always be a favourite. The other is ‘Short Stories By Goons’, a collection of short stories written by some of our members as part of a monthly challenge and published by the club in 2023.
Why are you a member of TGBC?
From the moment I joined TGBC I have felt at ease and accepted for who I am. There’s no need for bravado, or to try and fit in. The club embraces all sort of guys, but doesn’t put up with any bullshit. TGBC has also introduced me to new perspectives and ideas. This club has made me a better man.
What do you think a "Tough Guy" is?
I think a Tough Guy is someone who is willing to step up and do the right thing. They’re someone who can support others, and also ask for help when they are in need. Someone who can take new ideas on board and grow.
What is your favourite library?
It would have to be the State Library of Victoria. I’ve got treasured memories from the 80s, when my Grandfather would take me into the city on the train to visit the library and museum when they were in the same building on Swanston Street.
What is something people wouldn't know about you if they judged you by your cover?
I tend to be pretty loud and boisterous in social situations, but it’s usually a cover for social anxiety. New situations and crowds make me feel incredibly uncomfortable and I tend to overcorrect at times and get a bit rowdy.
