TGBC – #cansforclub Fundraising Instructions (Australian Chapters Only)
(Excludes SA and NT due to different container refund systems)
Here’s a simple guide for chapters to help raise funds for Tough Guy Book Club through your local Container Deposit Refund Scheme. Every eligible can or bottle returned helps support club operations, events, and outreach.
Collect eligible containers
- Chapters can encourage members to bring in eligible drink containers at each monthly meeting
- Eligible items usually include:
- Aluminium cans
- Plastic drink bottles
- Glass drink bottles
- Juice and flavoured milk containers (state‑dependent)
Containers must generally be:
- Between 150ml and 3L
- Empty
- Not crushed
- Showing a readable barcode (Eligibility varies slightly by state — check your local scheme.)
Return containers at your local refund point Each state/territory has its own refund network:
- NSW – Return & Earn
- VIC – CDS Vic
- QLD – Containers for Change
- WA – Containers for Change
- TAS – Recycle Rewards
- ACT – Return-It
Chapters can choose to:
- Return containers individually, OR - Nominate one member to do a bulk return after each meeting.
Donate the refund to TGBC
Each container is worth 10 cents, and it adds up quickly.
Chapters can donate funds by:
- using the unique TGBC barcode attached to specific scheme
- search for the name "TOUGH GUY BOOK CLUB" in the can-machine's 'donate' function
- Transferring the refund total to TGBC via the donate function on the website
Promote #cansforclub at your chapter Officers can remind members:
- Bring eligible containers to chapter events (not necessarily meetings if it isn't convenient)
- Ask workplaces, gyms, or mates to save their cans for TGBC
- Share the #cansforclub hashtag in your chapter’s group chat and the Pool Hall
- Set up a small collection bin at meetings or events: doesn't hurt to ask if you can. Even a small chapter can raise meaningful funds over time.
Optional: Set up a public collection point such as your venue or the Bunnings BBQ
If your venue allows it, chapters can:
- Ask to place a small TGBC‑branded bin at your venue on Chapter meeting night
- Collect containers from regulars
- Arrange for a member to empty it weekly or monthly
- Always check with the venue first - some venues have their own system to offset their waste management costs.
- Keep it simple and consistent
- The goal is not to create extra work — just to build a steady, low‑effort fundraising stream across the country.
A few containers each month from each chapter becomes a significant contribution when multiplied across TGBC.
