Name:
James Barry aka JB
Chapter:
Footscray VIC
Who are you:
Real quick: a son, a brother, a mate, and board member of TGBC.
How long have you been with TGBC:
My first meeting was the inaugural Footscray chapter meet in February 2016. There were three of us that night: Shay, Wash, and myself. We discussed Gaiman's 'American Gods'.
How did you end up coming to TGBC:
I had moved from Meanjin-Brisbane to Naarm-Melbourne in 2015 and originally heard about the Fortitude Valley chapter in QLD.
What’s your favourite TGBC book?
Bloody tough question. I believe Australian writers bat well above the average, yet are overlooked internationally. Without a doubt, my favourite TGBC book has to be 'Johnno' by David Malouf. I found is so moving and compelling that I wrote a book review for it. I had never written a review before, turns it would be the first of many!
Why are you a member of TGBC?:
I became a member seeking like-minded blokes originally. My role within TGBC expanded somewhat when I started turning up to the extracurricular events (Howl at the Moon, anyone?) Eventually I was tapped to take over as Footscray Chapter President in 2017. Running the monthly meetings in a suburb I love has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Being a servant of this club and helping blokes read more, talk more and have more friends - and that's what it's all about.
What do you think a "Tough Guy" is?:
Well, little JB would say that a Tough Guy was a white hat cowboy like Shane. Someone who stands with those who need help. With a lot of time and a little bit of maturity, my best representation of what tough guy is, is definitely my Mum.
What's your favourite library?:
The old brutalist State Library in Meanjin Brisbane.
What book have we not read yet that you’d like to do at TGBC:
It's Raining In Mango, Thea Astley
What something people wouldn't know about you if they judged you by your cover?:
That I am a cat-dad of 2.
